IMPACTS

SUMMER 2008

Dear Contact,

Summer seems to be fluctuating between wet, warm, windy weather making us wonder wether this is first signs of climate change.

H&S Home H&S winners
Four of the first candidates for the Health & Safety qualifcations were presented special Awards at the Royal Show with Judith Donovan, HSE 'Champion for farming'. Over 900 candidates, in the first year, have achieved the level 3 & 2 qualifications. We want to make it easier for tutors to support and for isolated people to access, so are giving away Online Learning Materials for Level 2 (to international SCORM compliance standards, meaning that it should fit most e-learning platforms).

We have now added "food footprint" as a measure of food sustainability, as we want to promote this metaphor - based on 'ecological footprint' that uses land size, to emphasise that many of the food and farm issues will come down to land. This contrasts with using the food version of "carbon footprint" which measures only carbon and is expressed as a volume of gas equivalent.

Check out our reports page for the latest national and international food reports, now that food is on many politicians' lips due to rapidly rising food & fuel prices.

Our Director, Dr Charlie Clutterbuck, was speaking in the Martyrs' Marqee at the recent Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival (Programme pdf p4) along with Joanna Blythman and Tim Lang (speakers graphic) in a discussion called 'Tolpuddle to Tescos'. Charlie also has a forthcoming paper about Pesticides, in context of more Sustainable Farming, due out in a few weeks in BCPC's Outlooks for Pest Management.

epaw home EPAW Home "environmental practice" now at No2 in google (please continue to link to our site).
"TUC surveys of attitudes to environmental issues in the workplace have found that there's overwhelming support from union members for unions themselves to do more to promote good environmental practice at work." We kid you not! So says the Communications Union Green paper

Dr Charlie Clutterbuck has been invited to join the committee set up by LANTRA with other SSCs to develop Environmental National Occupational Standards. These have been a long time coming...

The Developing Environmental Awareness OCNW (pdf) qualification (level 2 for level 4/3 candidates) has been reaccredited by QCA with two new modules - one "promoting sustainable food" (hurrah!) and one for "carbon use in the organisation". Our online tutors' guidance is at DEA and is being updated to reflect these developments.

We are currently developing an online Environmental Management System toolkit for small businesses to guide companies through implementing a system conforming to ISO 14001 standards. Our database can track and measure progress. Ultimately this will be a completely virtual, paper free, auditable system, with plenty of resources on which to model your own unique system. Have a look what we are up to "Environmental Management System".
