Unit 5 Managing the use of Transport

Introduction

This unit is about the impact of transport on the environment. You will learn about the environmental issues relating to transport and how these might be reduced. You will carry out a survey within your own organisation to see how transport might be reduced.

WHAT YOU MUST LEARN

Environmental Impact

Understand how road transport has increased and the business use of transport.

Understand the problems that transport creates e.g. global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion, asthma and respiratory problems, noise, road building, traffic accidents, vehicle waste, use of scarce resources.

Use of Transport

Know how transport is used in your own organisation e.g. for deliveries, travel between sites, on site etc.

Know the different types of transport used e.g. lorries, trucks, cars, fork lifts etc.

Reducing the environmental impact

Understand the problems in cutting transport.

Know the methods of reducing fuel/travel e.g. vehicle maintenance, encouraging staff to use cycles, pool cars, rail freight, using local suppliers etc.

Understand greener driving techniques e.g. driving economically, greener fuels, route planning etc. Know how to audit transport use and gain staff support and suggestions for reducing the impact of transport.

Know how to introduce changes in transport policy in your own organisation.
