LO5. Know the consequences of safe versus unsafe behaviour and the impact that has on attitude of others towards risk

Behavioural safety is the process of involving employees working out ways that they are most likely to be injured. The approach seeks their involvement, obtaining their "buy in" to observe and monitor co-employees with a view to reducing their unsafe bahaviours. It means obtaining increased improvements in safety performance through the promotion of safe behaviours at all levels in the workplace and in an organisation. Safe behaviour starts at the top.

Some people use phrases like "the nanny state" to convey the idea that there is too much control already. Other phrases you may hear include: "wrapping people in cotton wool" or "safety getting in the way of the job".

These casual observations can show quite dangerous attitudes to health & safety. Any safety behavioural programme would target these individuals. If you hear these statements, do not just ignore them. Ask whether a bit of cotton wool before the event isnt a lot better than tonnes of it after the accident.
