1 Eliminate or reduce the hazard at source
ie design out or remove it eg reduce engine noise

2 Eliminate the need for persons to be exposed
ie remove the need for employee involvement eg closed systems for mixing pesticides

3 Use guards and other means of supression,

ie prevent the hazard reaching fellow employees eg. curtains on mowers

4 Reduce the probability of occurrence by altering the task
ie change the method used..eg use two to lift

5 Reduce the area of the hazard that can do harm

ie box in and ventilate, send noise elsewhere eg build box round noisy machine-

6 Provide personnel protective clothing,

ie wear properly fitted equipment to cut out noise/dust

7. Warn and inform

ie if, & only if, adequate safety can be achieved by - warning notices, training etc.
