 March 2003...

We hope you enjoy this month's issue of IMPACTS - where you find out about environmental skills at work.

New National Occupational Standards for Environmental Competences
EMTA, the National Training Organisation for engineering manufacture soon to be the Sector Skills Council for the Scientific, Engineering and Marine Sectors have developed National Occupational Standards for environmental competence. These sit within the occupational map for engineering. EAL, the EMTA Awarding Body, accredit the Environmental Effectiveness Award against these standards. Other Awarding Bodies can also use the standards to develop appropriate awards.

This level 2 Award is suitable for employees working under supervision and may become an additional unit for Modern Apprenticeships in enginering & manufacture and BIT schemes. The award encourages candidates to make suggestions for ways to reduce impacts and use environmentally friendly work practices. EAL has arranged a series of nationwide workshops helping their assessors/IVs to become competent to assess the new award.

edie does it with EASE
The Environmental Awareness Scheme for Employees (EASE) has been included in edie's (Environmental Data Interactive Exchange) environmental portal website. EASE makes ISO 14001 training cheaper, more flexible and easier to audit than traditional "environmental awareness" sessions. All employees complete a series of short activities compiled in a workbook that demonstrate compliance with the training requirements of Clause 4.4.2.
