"On April 1 2003 members of Cornwall County Council voted to approve the following recommendation, resulting from a motion from County Councillor Rachel Ewer: This recognises that the artificial genetic modification of crop plants is a relatively new branch of science and technology; that there is still scientific debate about the safety of GM crops and that the commercial growing of GM crops presents legal, economic, social and ethical problems that have not yet been properly addressed, and declares that the county of Cornwall will be kept free of GM crops and GM food and animal feed. It commits the County Council to requesting the Secretary of State for the environment to provide legal protection for the county as a GM free area, ensuring that no GM cropshttp://www.epaw.co.uk/quizGM.htmlhas control../../../../WINDOWS/TEMP/GoliveTmp/FTPTmp/www.epaw.co.uk/public_html/sfg/images/GMquiz.gifM free policy for all goods and services for which it is responsible."
