Beaches
The
UK has a long, varied and often picturesque coastline. Its marine
activities have been the lifeblood of the nations' development.
Some of britain's most popular resorts, including Blackpool's
Golden Mile, Bognor Regis, bridlington and Hastings, have been
attacked as unfit for swimming. Other popular seaside towns
with "water of insufficient quality" in the European Commission
tests include Southsea, Folkestone, Pevensey Bay, Lynmouth and
Southport.

Some
57 beaches out of 486 in April 1998 failed the European Bathing
Water directive standards -slightly up on the previous year.
Beaches, which have bathing water of insufficient quality,
are areas where parents would hesitate to take their children.
Water companies have now spent £2000m on new sewage works
around the United Kingdom coast. But the Marine Conservation
Society survey still reports raw sewage being discharged into
the sea. The water companies say that many of the problems
come from agricultural pollution flowing from the rivers and
into the sea.
