Global Sea & Coast - 4

Much of the global fishing effort is targeted at a few species, located primarily near the top of the food chain. Overexploitation of these species has three effects:
  • Loss of genetic diversity as fish populations decline.
  • Relative abundance of individual species or the mix of different species within an ecosystem. Both the target species and their predators decline
  • Depleted fisheries have direct economic impacts, including reduced income and unemployment and higher consumer prices
Over hunting has decimated many marine mammal populations. 90 marine mammal species are listed as threatened or endangered.
