ACTIVITY 2.4 - Environmental Risk Assessment
 

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this activity, you will be able to
· Carry out an environmental risk assessment
· Judge environmental risks of aspects of work
· Demonstrate role of social criteria in environmental risk assessment

Assessment Criteria
You will
· Apply the components of risk to the environment
· Assess environmental impacts of work
· Include social criteria in risk assessment
· Indicate whether impacts are local, regional or global.

Task 1 - Environmental Risk Assessment

You are going to judge the two main components of risk:

  • severity of possible harm of the impact.

  • likelihood - Chance, frequency.

Judge each of the following work aspects according to their impacts and put in one of the squares below:

  • Oil seepage

  • Diesel fumes emissions

  • Disposal of pallets to landfill

  • VOC emissions from paint

  • Asbestos roof disposal

  • Weed Killer spray

Allocate each of the work aspects to appropriate box and indicate whether they impact at local, regional or global levels (put L, R, G after aspect)

Explain in a few paragraphs how you assessed the risk for 3 of the above work aspects and judged the impacts for severity and likelihood.


Task 2 - Your workplace environmental risk assessment

Repeat the exercise.

Choose 3 aspects of your own workplace you identified in activity 1.3/1.7 or 2.1 and determine the risk of associated impacts.
Put the aspects in the appropriate boxes below

Task 3 - Social and Economic Considerations

  1. Consider what is meant by the social criteria: image, relationships, concerns, community, stakeholders.

  2. Choose the same 3 aspects from task 2 and consider how each of the associated impacts may be altered by considering:

    1. Image

    2. Relationships

    3. Concerns

    4. Community

    5. Stakeholders

  3. Does your risk assessment change by considering these criteria?
