ACTIVITY 2.1 - Aspects and Impacts

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this activity, you will be able to
· Identify the aspects of work that create environmental impacts
· Predict direct environmental impacts
· Describe several indirect impacts.

Assessment Criteria
You will
· Define work aspects, such as emissions, discharges, wastes and spillages
· Explain environmental impacts in terms of land, air, water, health, resource depletion and nuisance
· List indirect impacts arising from work functions such as raw materials, energy, transport and food

You may wish to test yourself on what are 'activities', 'aspects' and 'impacts'.

Task 1:
Choose one process/activity from work. You may want to pick up on the chart you made in Activity 1.6.

List 3 ASPECTS of that activity/process that interact with the environment, e.g spillages (interact with land), emissions (interact with air), discharges (interact with water).

Identify how each of the aspects may DIRECTLY IMPACT on the environment. You may want to use the results of Activity1.7. The impacts may be local or global, positive or negative. Include possible health effects, resource depletion and nuisance. e.g emissions to air may impact on health in community.

Task 2:

Do the same for either of the functions:

Raw materials, transport, energy, waste or food.

List several impacts of these functions - these are INDIRECT impacts.
The impacts may include positive or negative affects on land, air, water and health. They should also include resource depletion and nuisance

Allow 1-2 hours (maximum) to complete this activity.
