Aspects describe some action between your work and the environment.
Examples of aspects include:

  • emissions (to air)

  • discharges / spillages (to water)

  • disposal / release (to land)

  • use (from land)

  • consumption (from air/water)

Aspects describe part of the work that does something that may impact of the environment.

Impacts

Then look at the actual reaction with the environment. This is called the impact. The IMPACT is the actual change, beneficial or adverse, on any part of the environment. The "impact" describes the change that takes place. It may be beneficial or harmful.

This is how they compare:

Aspects Main impact
Emissions to air Global warming
Releases to water Dead fish
Solid Waste Unsightly landfill site
Discharges to land Damage to ecosystems

Activities and processes usually have more than one aspect and many impacts.
