One of the aspects of our lives that has the greatest impact on the environment is right under your nose. Food.

You may have a canteen at work, or you may bring your own food. More and more people go out and get their food, either from take-aways, cafes or restaurants. Twenty years ago, many organisations were proud to have subsidised canteens. In the 1980s these were considered "luxury". There is no law that says employers should provide food - only a clean place for eating. Many canteens have turned into vending machines or microwaves.

Education organisations were particularly affected. From the turn of the century the law said that all children were entitled to subsidised food to make sure they had one decent meal per day. The government in the 1980s removed this law so allowing children to escape to the nearby "burger" and "fish n chip" vans.
