Energy is the capacity to do work.

There are two famous laws governing energy:

  1. Energy is always conserved and
  2. Energy always goes from more useful forms to less useful forms.

The amount of energy available for use after each conversion to another form is always less than the original form. The rest, usually heat or noise are dispersed into the atmosphere. This is because the fundamental principle of the Law of Energy is that it can not be created nor destroyed.
