Indicators are measurements of something useful. Indicators have been used to measure economic performance, "the rate of inflation" or "unemployment rates". Now they are being adapted to measure environmental performance. They tell us something - but not everything.

There are already all sorts of indicators at work to check performance of the processes, products, and people.

Particular ones can be chosen to indicate some aspect of environmental performance. These are called environmental performance indicators.

The world is using indicators more and more.
