Loss

Plants and animals are becoming extinct at a rapid rate. tropical forests, coral reefs, and wetlands are particularly at risk.

The most important causes in the current loss of biodiversity are the destruction and alteration of habitats. The United Nations reports that 80% of species decline is a result of habitat destruction. Because of the world-wide loss or conversion of habitats that has already taken place, tens of thousands of species are already committed to extinction.
