WHAT IS 'THE ENVIRONMENT'?
The environment is "Everything around us including ourselves", according to Einstein. Everyday, we hear somebody saying something about "the environment", although it seems to cover anything from global warming to local litter. The environment is usually divided into Land, Air and Water, and - not forgetting ourselves, People.

HEALTH
The health of people is a key indicator of a good environment. Good health is determined by what you do for work, where you live, how much you earn and what you eat. These elements determine how long you live; the richest people live longer than poorer people, as they can afford better housing, food and access to health services. Life expectancy has increased in the UK over the past 150 years, mainly due to public health improvements - particularly relating to water and sewage.

However, life expectancy is likely to decrease as a result of the obesity/diabetes epidemic now emerging. 70,000 people in UK are expected to die early next year asa a result of food related disorders. (Food Matters)

'Environmental health' measures the impacts of workplaces on the people living around. Environmental health effects may be detected a long way away, determined by the above factors. Occupational health measures the illness caused by chemical and physical impacts in the workplace, such as asthma and muscle/bone disorders.

Asbestos kills about 3000 people a year in the UK, from exposure both at work and in the community about as many people that are killed on the roads each year

As the earth warms up, it is expceted that...more people will suffer from diseases like Malaria - more.
