WHAT IS 'THE ENVIRONMENT'?
The environment is "Everything around us including ourselves", according to Einstein. Everyday, we hear somebody saying something about "the environment", although it seems to cover anything from global warming to local litter. The environment is usually divided into Land, Air and Water, and - not forgetting ourselves, People.

WATER

The two main probems regarding water:
'Water contamination' occurs when sea water around our shores is treated like a great septic tank, into which we pore anything expecting that the sea will deal with it. It cannot cope with the tonnes of plastic and tonnes of oil thrown in. The UK is now required to stop putting raw sewage into the sea. Rivers and lakes become contaminated from chemical and effluent spills, often resulting in dead fish, expensive clean-up costs, legal expenses and heavy fines. If all people could get access to clean water, countless lives would be saved each year.

'Water Conservation' will become one of the most important issues in the 21st century. Only 1 % of all water is fresh. Increasingly there are political disputes about who owns and controls freshwater. A dam may be good for one group but bad for another - who may be submerged or cut off from water supplies.
