Waste Disposal Information

Different sorts of waste

There are 4 different sorts of waste:

  • Household Waste from homes, kerbside recycling, Recycling Centres and street cleaning. New household Duty of Care introduced in 2005 means householders duty to take reasonable measures to ensure that household waste produced on their property is passed on to an authorised person. • Commercial and Industrial waste from businesses such as shops, factories and offices. What business must do with their waste - from NetRegs
  • Construction and Demolition waste from building and development activities. The majority of this type of waste can be recycled or re-used, such that nationally only about 4% is disposed of as waste.
  • Hazardous wastes are particularly dangerous substances such as medical waste and poisonous chemicals. These wastes can also be found in some items of household equipment. Since 2005, producers of hazardous waste are required to notify Environment Agency. All you need to know about hazardous waste
Waste Law

Any organisation that produces waste has a "Duty of Care" which they must secure their waste and sets out storage, handling, transfer and disposal requirements throughout the waste chain.

The Duty of Care lays an onus on the producer of the waste to ensure that no one in the chain from collection to disposal commits an offence. Documentation at each transfer is maintained and a registered carrier always handles the waste. Your waste can be traced at every stage through disposal.

The new Household Duty of Care should lead to better waste management and help to reduce illegal waste activity such as fly-tipping.
