LO5. How to carry out a workplace/farm inspection and, where appropriate, report findings to management

Inspection

Inspections are one way to ensure proper maintenance of health and safety procdures and check that they are working. There are legal rights for union appointed or employee representative safety reps to carry out an inspection either every 3 months, or whenever necessary.

Inspections can be carried out alone or with a colleague, as two pairs of eyes are always better - especially if one of the pairs is new to the situation. It is advisable to ask any employees for their comments as they are closer to concerns and remember the aim of this exercise is to improve systems of work, not to blame anyone.
