Partners:

Putting sustainable development into practice started at the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro on 1992. The Agenda for the Twenty First century, popularly known as Agenda 21, encourages partnerships with the major groups.

"Agenda 21 is a dynamic programme. It will be carried out by the various actors according to the different situations, capacities and priorities of countries....This process marks the beginning of a new global partnership for sustainable development".

The next Earth Summit, held in Johannesburg, and known as the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) re-inforced the importance of working in partnership.
