Carbon Information

The great world plan to cut emssions is called Kyoto. The USA, China and India have not set any targets.

The EU has committed itself to reduce GHGs by 20% in 2020 compared to 1990 levels. The EU believes believes in the Emissions Trading Scheme, where big polluters are given permits which they can use or trade. Nearly a thousand companies transferred over seven million tons of carbon dioxide during the first year of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS).

The UK is the first government to has a climate change policy. There will be a new independent body to monitor emissions. UK Carbon Dioxide emissions have increased during the Labour government 1997-07, going up in 2006 by 1%.

Carbon Labelling..

The Carbon Trust launched in March 2007 a carbon reduction label that demonstrates a commitment from companies to reduce the carbon footprint of their products.

The label and methodology will be trialled by a number of major brands to test and build consumer understanding. It is hoped that the new label will help consumers make purchasing decisions by displaying a measure of a product’s carbon content from source to store. More from Carbon Trust.

Carbon Trust and Defra join with British Standards (BSI) to develop a standard method for measuring the embodied GHG emissions in products and services. TESCO & UKERC to develop methodology
