The Clean Air Act 1993 replaced the Clean Air Acts from the 1950s.

Part 1 prohibits the emission of dark smoke from chimneys.

Part 2 controls smoke, grit, dust and fumes from any furnace or industrial boiler.

Air Quality Strategy (AQS) brought under the Environment Act 1995, sets levels for nine pollutants, to protect human health or the environment.

Regulations were introduced in late 2002 to enact the EU Directive to control emissions from waste incineration. More
