The car

The car is one of the heaviest users of fossil fuel. If the average miles per gallon were raised from 28 (global average) to at least 46 this would save 2,100 gallons of fuel for every car over a 10 year period. Reduced fuel consumption would decrease the greenhouse gas emissions proportionately.

Fuel-efficient cars generally have smaller engines and a maximum engine size together with minimum miles per gallon advised by the manufacturers. For every 100cc reduction in engine size there is approximately 3% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions together with financial savings in number of mpg.

Higher fuel efficiency pays for itself through fuel cost savings so there is no added cost for the reduction of emissions. The most efficient cars are the smaller, slower and bottom-of-the-line models.

Cars with a longer life span reduce quantities of scrap and extend the use of raw materials. Many cars now have coded parts to aid recycling which also reduces the amount of disposed scrap. Streamlined vehicles reduce drag and consequently reduce fuel consumption. All cars should be regularly maintained to ensure they are operating at optimum efficiency.
