Transport Impacts - Air & Water

Air

Transport is a major contributor to global warming /climate change as most transport emits CO, CO2, NOX, SOX

Hydrocarbon vapours released react with nitrogen oxides to form ground level ozone, which contributes to photochemical smogs (below). transport also produces carbon monoxide and lead (below), noise and nuisance.

Aeroplanes cause excessive amounts of noise pollution, whilst using 5 times more fuel than a train to carry the same number of passengers.

Water

Pollution in the form of oils and fuels run-off from roads and garages into water courses and water tables, killing fish and other aquatic life.

New roads are built with interceptor tanks to capture run-off. When drained this sludge has to be disposed of, usually by incineration.
