Transport Impacts - Health

Health

Transport is one of the major contributors to poor air quality within our towns and cities causing increased incidence of respiratory ailments, heart disease and cancer.

Annual loss of life from motor accidents is approximately 60,000.

PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG

Photochemical smog is caused by the action of sunlight on hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides from vehicle and industrial emissions. The most significant products are ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN). Both cause eye irritation, headaches, coughs and chest discomfort. Long term effects of exposure are unknown. It is toxic to plants causing chlorosis on foliage.
