7 Steps to HESSME
Step
1 How
to start
Make
a commitment to manage H&E at boardroom level. The manager should
appoint an individual and be given the authority to collect data
and devise a strategy.
Step
2 Review state of health and environment
Review
health and environmental impacts. Measure costs of ill-health and
environment, in terms of resource usage, waste etc. Determine the
main health and environmental impacts of the workplace.
Step
3 Carry out Risk Assessment
Use
the methods of safety risk assessment, developed to take into account
health improvements and environmental impacts.
Step
4 Set targets for improvement
Determine
the longer- term objectives. Set targets for improvements that can
achieved in the foreseeable future to maintain morale and long term
targets that produce real results.
Step
5 Achieve your targets
Achieve
the targets. Various operating measures are put in place to help
achieve the improvements in HES measures identified should now be
implemented. Performance can be measured in terms of indicators
including minimising staff absenteeism, reducing waste, making staff
H&E Aware.
Step
6 Report the outcome
Report
on the outcome by publicising the improvements being make inside
and outside the company. Find out what a report on HES should cover
Step
7 continual improvement
Repeat
the cycle. Further opportunities for improvements should be explored
