ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Organisation creates impacts - some positive others negative, on the environment. Many organisations have reduced the direct impacts - such as smoke going into the air. However, the impact is often indirect, meaning it is felt elsewhere: e.g. When you switch on a light it is the Power stations elsewhere that pollute the air.

DIRECT IMPACTS - AIR

Emissions from workplaces can impact on the air locally or across the continent and globe.

Local air pollution includes carbon and sulphur dioxide mostly from burning fossil fuels to generate energy and fuel transport. These cause many deaths from 'smogs' that affect cities. Many people died in the 1950s, resulting in stricter controls on air pollutants. There is a lot of concern that pollutants from incinerators, such as dioxins, may damage health.

The greatest impact is global, as greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels threaten to change our climate.
