ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Organisation creates impacts - some positive others negative, on the environment. Many organisations have reduced the direct impacts - such as smoke going into the air. However, the impact is often indirect, meaning it is felt elsewhere: e.g. When you switch on a light it is the Power stations elsewhere that pollute the air.

INDIRECT IMPACTS - WASTE

In the UK, we produce enough rubbish each week to fill Wembley Stadium, (now the new Millennium Stadium) - half of which could be recycled. Land is taken out of production and used for landfill sites. Releases of methane gas from landfill sites contributes to global warming. Most hazardous waste is converted to heat by incineration, this also contributes to climate change.

Waste incorrectly disposed of may contaminate landfill sites and pollute water courses, causing impacts upon our health through infections and toxic effects.

Landfill has been a favoured option for waste disposal in the past, but it is a waste of resources. We need to recover value from the waste we produce to live more sustainably.
