ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AT WORK

Work creates impacts - some positive others negative, on the environment. Many organisations have reduced the direct impacts - such as smoke going into the air. However, the impact is often indirect, meaning it is felt elsewhere: e.g. When you switch on a light it is the Power stations elsewhere that pollute the air.

DIRECT IMPACTS - WATER

Work processes use water, for washing, heating, and many other uses, consider what you use water for at work. Increasing amounts of water are used each year.

Waste liquid discharges and sludge are disposed of into watercourses and through the sewage system. Organisations with permission to discharge into rivers are subject to strict conditions laid down by the Environment Agency. The quality of our drinking water can be affected by freshwater pollution.

Some 779 pollution incidents had a serious impact on water in 2003, a 7% decrease from 2002. The most severe pollution incidents affecting water quality increased by 14% in 2003. Overall the long-term decrease in incidents continues.

Most companies discharge something to drain. As we are finding out now water, so often taken for granted, actually is an expensive commodity. Water management is now a common phrase used in industrial circles as more organisations realise that as a resource it should be managed responsibly.
