ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Organsation creates impacts - some positive others negative, on the environment. Many organisations have reduced the direct impacts - such as smoke going into the air. However, the impact is often indirect, meaning it is felt elsewhere: e.g. When you switch on a light it is the Power stations elsewhere that pollute the air.

DIRECT IMPACTS - LAND

Workplaces take up land. Often the best land for growing is taken over by "out of town" developments, such as supermarkets and industrial estates. Most planners would prefer organisations to develop "brownfield" sites - those that have already been used for something but now derelict.

Many enterprises contaminate land. Oil and chemicals may leak or be spilt and then persist in the soil or find their way into water-courses. Use of contaminated land is restricted, requiring treatment before building. Companies often pay huge costs to treat land.
