ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS

Organisation creates impacts - some positive others negative, on the environment. Many organisations have reduced the direct impacts - such as smoke going into the air. However, the impact is often indirect, meaning it is felt elsewhere: e.g. When you switch on a light it is the Power stations elsewhere that pollute the air.

INDIRECT IMPACTS - ENERGY

Most energy comes from fossil fuels, like coal, oil or gas. These are 'finite' resources - there is only a limited amount, and once they have gone they have gone forever. Other renewable energy sources, such as wind and sun, can be used forever.

Energy use impacts on the land (mining and drilling for reserves), the air (greenhouse gases) and water (oil pollution).

The main concern is that energy use is increasing with economic growth, but within a few years demand will outstrip supply leading to conflicts about who controls energy supplies in the world.
