What
Cooperation is the process of working or acting together.
Cooperation is one of four key elements in developing a positive
health and safety culture.
“The safety culture of an organisation is the product of individual and group values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behaviour that determine the commitment to, and the style and proficiency of, an organisation’s health and safety management. Organisations with a positive safety culture are characterised by communications founded on mutual trust, by shared perceptions of the importance of safety and by confidence in the efficacy of preventive measures.” Organising for safety HSE Books 1993 More on safety culture (Wikipedia)
Co-operation: health and safety will flourish in a climate of co-operation, where people work together, help each other out and actively try to safeguard each other’s health and safety. What is the best way to improve cooperation?
Communication: staff need to know who to tell if they find a problem, or ask if they are not
sure. Communication must work up, down and across your organisation. Who communicates commitment to health and safety?
Autonomous workers who able to move round at
work - supervisors, skilled workers and union reps are the key to convey information both up and down the farm business.
Competence:
People work more safely when to do the job properly. This involves
training and briefed about all parts of the work. Is there enough information about
the risks and the preventive measures? This qualification build competence in these areas.
Control: Responsibilities should be clearly allocated so that people know what they are responsible - and accountable - for. Have responsibilities for health and safety been allocated to specific people?
