Guide to Unit 2 - 5

Activity 2.3

Risk is a difficult concept. It varies from person to person. This activity encourages you to think about what you consider is a risk. It aims to give you the confidence to make risk judgments. Everybody will carry a bias when making a risk judgment. There is nothing wrong with that. You just need to recognise what that bias may be.

Task: You will assess six possible events to find out which you consider the worst risk - to yourself. They are not separate risks, e.g. global warming may be increasing the amount of flooding. But which do you consider is the most risk? When you do this assessment you will see that you take into account the likely harm and the possibility of the event occurring. This is the basis of all risk assessment.

You will use this method to identify further risk situations and explain why you consider them risky. You are as capable as anybody else in judging risk. Everybody tends to ignore the risks that occur somewhere else.
