Performance Standard 1. Check Law (also corresponds to ISO 14001 4.3.2)

Take into account applicable laws and regulations, including host country obligations under international law for the following:

Analyse the key stages of the project/product/process cycle.

Include preconstruction, construction, operations, and decommissioning or closure - the whole "life cycle".

Consider the role and capacity of third parties (such as local and national governments, contractors and suppliers).

Address these risks and impacts commensurate to the control and influence over the third party actions.

Consider the impacts associated with supply chains, particularly where the resource utilised by the project is ecologically sensitive.

Take into account potential transboundary effects, such as pollution of air, or use or pollution of international waterways, as well as global impacts, such as the emission of greenhouse gasses.

Make the assessment adequate, accurate, and objective evaluation and presentation of the issues.

Retain external experts where there are significant adverse impacts or where technically complex issues are involved.
